Afternoon Nap—Cork, Ireland

Canon EOS 20D, 10–22mm ƒ/3.5–4.5 lens

This very wide lens can produce a slightly skewed effect under certain circumstances, like here.

Pigs Are People Too—London, UK

Canon EOS 20D, 10–22mm ƒ/3.5–4.5 lens

With a lens this wide, it’s necessary to get very close to your subjects if you want a tighter crop.

So which lens?

As you can probably tell by now, street photography is perfectly feasible with all kinds of lenses. We haven’t even touched on those that create special effects such as tilt-shift and fisheye lenses, but this section is designed to provide an introduction into commonly used and ideal street photography kit.

What you buy will really depend on what you can afford, and what you are prepared to carry around with you in terms of weight. Although I love the quality of images a 24–70mm ƒ/2.8 lens creates, it is the antithesis of discreet, and it can be tiresome to carry around for hours at a time. In 43°C temperatures and close to 100% humidity in Mumbai, I found that physically I could simply not carry this lens on my DSLR around my neck all day, and found it far more enjoyable to use a smaller film SLR with a prime lens under these conditions.
